The Salvington Core Approach

Salvington's core teaching is based around conversations - concentrations of illumination of mind - classrooms to practice the sevenfold phases of learning - communions to apply your Authorship towards the One Authority - and a culture of non-competitive collaboration and cooperative collegiality.

Our conversational tutorials support each student in advancement of the seven phases of learning. We call these tutorials, and it's your chance to talk in-depth about the 'subject at hand', and to receive individual guidance and direction on your unfolding transformation.

As well as tutorials, depending on your course you will also have a combination of conclave retreats, lectures, study group trainings, independent study of writing preparatory essays, several university activities, and college classroom time each week.

Together, these opportunities provide the perfect environment for an outstanding education; the training preparatory necessary to one day become a candidate for God Fusion and Ascended Cosmic Citizenship in Nebadon.

2023. University of Salvington

Salvington's core teaching is based around conversations, normally between two or three students and their tutor associate, who is a fellow advancing on that topic. We call these tutorials, and it's your chance to talk in-depth about your subject and to receive individual feedback on your work.

As well as tutorials, depending on your course you will also have a combination of seminar retreats, lectures, study group work, independent study of writing essays, conclaves, university activities, and college classroom time each week. Together, these opportunities provide the perfect environment for an outstanding education.

Tutorials:

Tutorials are central to teaching at Salvington. They offer a very rare level of personalized attention from associates and academic fellows.

Each week I was required to complete one or two inquiries, as well as reading sources from the reading list. I was encouraged to read beyond the facts, to make my own assumptions and to prove and disprove my own philosophies and theories. Another shock was that - for the first time - my investigations and inquiries  actually mattered. Rather than simply regurgitating the textbook, tutor associates  were asking me what I thought.

How does it work?

Usually students have one or two tutorials every week, often taking place in their college. Tutorials normally last about an hour, during which the tutor will give you feedback on prepared work on a particular topic. They may also use the opportunity to introduce a new topic and discuss this.

At the end of the tutorial, your tutors will set a new piece of work for you to get ready for the next. During the following week you will be expected to work independently to complete this.

A tutorial relies on the exchange of ideas into the ideal, so you need to be ready to present the divine ideas with a demonstration of understanding, accept constructive criticism and listen to others. Such regular and rigorous academic discussion develops and facilitates learning in a way that just isn't possible through lectures alone while transforming the intellectual understanding of ideas towards the soul actualization.

Tutorials are a fantastic way to explore ideas and get new perspectives. They develop your ability to think for yourself – an essential skill for academic success and something that the Celestial Government of Nebadon looks for in Salvington graduates.  Regular tutorials also allow for close progress monitoring so tutors can quickly provide additional support if necessary.

What is a 'tutorial'?

A tutorial is the weekly meeting all students have with a tutor and usually one or two other students, at which you are expected to talk in depth about the eternal ideas and perspectives relating to that week's reading or problems.

Although this might sound a bit daunting, we find that students soon grow in confidence and develop the skills required to make this academic discussion a successful one - no matter what your educational background.

Tutorial teaching allows you the freedom to push yourself academically and direct your own learning. Equally, tutors are able to monitor your progress closely and help you with any problems with your work at a very early stage.

Like students everywhere, you will probably learn most from your fellow students, and one of the best reasons for coming to Salvington is that you will learn from students with a similar enthusiasm for their subject.

The actuality of the existence of God is demonstrated in human experience by the indwelling of the divine presence, the spirit Monitor sent from Paradise to live in the mortal mind of man and there to assist in evolving the immortal soul of eternal survival.

The presence of this divine Adjuster in the human mind is disclosed by three experiential phenomena:

1. The intellectual capacity for knowing God—God-consciousness.

2. The spiritual urge to find God—God-seeking.

3. The personality craving to be like God—the wholehearted desire to do the Father’s will.

The existence of God can never be proved by scientific experiment or by the pure reason of logical deduction.

God can be realized only in the realms of human experience; nevertheless, the true concept of the reality of God is reasonable to logic, plausible to philosophy, essential to religion, and indispensable to any hope of personality survival.

Tutorials give ample opportunity for students to traverse the evolutionary emergence and unfoldment of mind and heart from their initial  intellectual experience to the highest urges and inclinations of their soul attainment; soul deliberations and decisions and determinations and discernments affording each to choose morally and courageously and to take spirit-led actions for direct knowing, and even to be advancing towards those differential actualizations bringing permanent empowering transformation and personality soul accomplishment.

Who gives tutorials?

There is at least one tutor associate fellow in College for all subjects on offer, who will arrange all the teaching and oversee the academic progress of the students - see the Fellows section for details of tutors and their specialities.

At the Colleges of Salvington Planetary Prince School, most of the teaching is given by Tutorial Fellows, but some is done by the College Associate Fellows, many of whom are Fellows at other Colleges. Fellows who are here primarily doing their own revelatory research also contribute to teaching. Since an important aspect of tutorial teaching is the way that close and regular contact allows students and tutors to get to know each other, we aim to provide continuity of teaching and unofficial contact.

Weekly classes: seminars, conclaves, practical sessions

As well as teaching in tutorials, many courses have seminars and/or practical sessions each week. These might cover specific areas of your course, or concentrate on developing your language or other particular skills. These may be compulsory or optional depending on the course. The quantity of these classes is also likely to vary depending on the stage in the degree.

Some courses have more weekly classes to allow students to develop the specific skills they need for their subject. For example, the schools of Trinity College and Imperium College will have more practical classes every week.

These classes might also give you an opportunity to find out more about the current research being undertaken by academics in your subject department.

Seminars, lab work and other practicals are organized by your subject department, so visit the course pages to find out more about what your course may offer.

Lectures: extending your learning transformation

Lectures cover important topics relating to your course, and are organised by your subject department. Different courses vary in the number of lectures that students have to attend each week, and at each stage of the degree.

Ministerial subjects tend to have a lot more lectures than certain other subjects and these are normally compulsory. Lectures are intended to supplement and support your independent studying and give information that will be relevant to what you are studying that term.

Salvington also offers a whole range of fascinating talks on different subjects which are available for anyone to attend. See what else you might be interested in hearing about by visiting the University events listings.

Workload: how busy will you be?

All our undergraduate courses are full-time, and on average our students spend around 40 hours a week studying. Every student will manage their time differently, making sure they can fit in all their studies, hobbies and interests. Learning how to juggle all your commitments is an important part of managing your time.

Studying independently

As a Salvington student you will be expected to spend a good proportion of your 40 hour week studying independently.

Every course involves slightly different independent study, but the basic principle is the same no matter what you study. Around your tutorials, lectures, seminars, labs, or other classes, you'll be expected to do your own inquiring and revelatory research, usually by going through a given reading list.

In this way, you will develop your knowledge and understanding in order to work your way through problem sheets or complete an essay. At your following tutorial, your tutor will feedback to you on the work which you present. Sometimes you will be expected to hand this in in advance of your tutorial or you may be asked to take it along at the time.

Managing your time

Students approach their work in their own way: whilst some people like to tackle an essay straight away, others prefer to wait for a looming deadline! Whichever style suits you, Salvington gives you access to all the resources you need. For instance, the opening of many college 'libraries' in Salvington - plus vast amounts of online resources like Salvington University podcasts - mean that you can always find what you need to do your work, whether you are up with the lark or prefer to hang out with the night owls.

…it initially felt like a bit of a culture shock as the onus to motivate yourself and get all of the reading and work done is completely on you.

New to time management?

If you haven't managed your own time or studied independently before starting at Salvington, then don't worry. All our new students will have different experiences of working, and that's why we offer a lot of support at the start of your degree to help you develop the skills you'll need.

The type of help you can expect could include:

  1. support from your tutor to get you started an induction to your department or faculty library, with explanations of where things are and how you can find them

  1. many courses will also offer you study skills and time management training

The University also has a lot of guidance about managing your time, and writing essays:

The great secret of all success is to wield constructively the power of your Creative Personality Authorship.

The right use of free will allows you to override all resistances .. all physical bodily resistance and laziness .. all misqualifications from lifetimes of learnings.

The constructive use of Authorship .. your Sovereign Inalienable Right of Existence of free will .. gives to you the powers of creation .. momentumizing power to set into motion your personality choices based upon priorities .. your individual directions built by values .. your decisions upheld by virtues of qualities .. your destiny.

Our Father is not in hiding; he is not in arbitrary seclusion. He has mobilized the resources of divine wisdom in a never-ending effort to reveal himself to the children of his universal domains.

There is an infinite grandeur and an inexpressible generosity connected with the majesty of his love which causes him to yearn for the association of every created being who can comprehend, love, or approach him; and it is, therefore, the limitations inherent in you, inseparable from your finite personality and material existence, that determine the time and place and circumstances in which you may achieve the goal of the journey of mortal ascension and stand in the presence of the Father at the center of all things.

Although the approach to the Paradise presence of the Father must await your attainment of the highest finite levels of spirit progression, you should rejoice in the recognition of the ever-present possibility of immediate communion with the bestowal spirit of the Father so intimately associated with your inner soul and your spiritualizing self.
